This 200 hour Yin Yoga + Hatha Yoga Teacher Training will give the budding instructor the insights and understandings to lead effective long-hold, deep-stretch classes within the context codified by Paul Grilley and further developed by Christopher Drozd.
The basis of the practice is a series of postures that focuses primarily on the hips and low back, although other joints may receive stimulation and attendant benefits, as well.
The cadre of Yin postures is small in comparison the the vast Hatha repertoire, and its alignment particulars are more directly determined by the yogi’s physical structure than by the aesthetic execution of any pose. Some postures will come easily, others will require more patience to accomplish and some may simply prove impossible, all based on the individual’s bony architecture. By exploring the capabilities of one’s own body, as well as others’ within this teacher training setting the aspirant gains an unparalleled self understanding that can immediately be applied within any yoga class setting, not just in Yin yoga.
Further, within the Yin yoga setting a philosophy of practice can be compiled and presented to students, less as a stand-alone endeavour and more as a complement to the more Yang disciplines of flow yoga, dance, swimming, cycling, running and the like. That is, the more static Yin practice, the physical and mental stillness that’s cultivated, class to class, balances the rhythm and repetition of Yang activities and establishes a Tao of exercise that supports health, well-being and performance. Yin yoga can rightly be billed as the real Yoga for Athletes!
Over two weeks students will practice the various Yin postures as participants in 75 minute classes, as well as in a pedagogical setting. Following their own practice the same postures and sequence will be detailed with regard to their positioning, including modifications, and to the benefits delivered to muscle, fascia, ligaments and joints. It’s all simple folding, bending and twisting… on the surface.
Yoga, of course, is more than just a physical journey. Teacher training students will learn how to compose their classes so as to ensure their students are being led through their practice, consciously and subconsciously, in ways that reinforce their expected and deserved desires for relaxation and rejuvenation. Language patterns will be taught that allow the Yin yoga teacher to guide their students confidently toward a more receptive state of mind where positive affirmations can be presented, received and ultimately utilised by their students.
The Yoga anatomy section addresses bones, joints, muscles, connective tissue along with the concept of tensegrity. When viewed in terms of floating compression, where the skeleton is suspended within a myofascial network, a new perspective of traditional yoga begins to evolve organically from Yin yoga training. The importance of stimulating connective tissue with protracted tension or compression, and the significance of each of these elements will be articulated as it is demonstrated pose to pose.
Finally, there will be a short history of Yin yoga and how it’s been distilled into this particular form. As well, concepts of Yin / Yang will be covered and made accessible.
This Yin teacher training is academic, experiential and enlightening. For some it may prove to be a deeply spiritual experience, something they can joyously share with their students. Because, in exploring one’s self in this way so as to discover the Self through the physical limb of yoga is yet one more opportunity for awakening. But, if nothing else, the teacher training student will learn how to get and give a righteous stretch!
